The basilica is not built according to the traditional basilical plan . It is in the shape of a Greek cross, decorated with four domes. The architectural style is eclectic.
Unlike most churches which traditionally have an East-West orientation , the basilica is North-South. The choice of this original axis is explained by a topographical reason, the narrowness of the plateau in this direction, and for a symbolic reason, that of opening the church towards the center of Paris.
