I had adventure on the brain so thought I do some exploring. I got a late start but that was good because I got to say Hi to Ranger Kat at the Peralta TH. I started off and took another look for the mine thatis supposed to just off Bluff Spring trail near the top of the hill by the TH. No luck there so on to Bluff Spring Mountain. I saw on a map "the cave of the bronze cross" on the west side of Bluff Spring Mountain. I took the wash just west of the Williams camp but didn't find much. I saw what may be a cave/alcove pretty high up but thought I save that for another day. With two outs and nobody on it wasn't looking good. The neat search was for Glen MaGill's Mine also on the west side of Bluff Spring Mountain. I had an early prospect but it was too far south. The second prospect farther to the north looks good. I'll return to get a closer look and see if safe to climb up to. Now it was off to find the old horse trail that goes east on the north of Bluff Spring Mountain and reconnects with the Dutchman trail. I found the horse trail and followed it off and on to the rock wall. That was an interesting detour. Now it was off to the north face of Black Mountain where there was supposed to be a cave. I've looked at the area several times and it's hard to tell if it's a shadow, bushes, a shallow recess or actually an alcove. I spotted an alcove high up that looked like the roof in the front had fallen down and concealed the opening. It was an ugly climb up but that comes with the territory. I got up to the opening and there was room behind the large rocks to explore. I got inside and saw trash of course. There was soot on the roof and bone fragments in the dirt. My eyes adjusted to the dim light and then I saw a corn cob on a rock inside. :o I wasn't expecting that and I'm not sure how old it really is but it is definitely a corn cob. I walked back outside to get a better shot of the cave and found a large pot sherd. It was time to start back and I was satisfied with my results. On the trip back I strolled up on a Gila Monster on the Dutchman trail. It was a little added bonus to my day. I could learn to like this hiking thing. ;)
