| no partners | | I was thinking about Reavis Falls but there wasn't that much rain and I didn't feel like making the drive. I still needed to check out Obie Stoker's mines, check out the glory holes near the Indian Paint mine and wander through Garden Valley so I went to First Water TH. The hike in was nice with only one other hiker on the trail. I thought it might get warm but the cloud cover kept me from feeling the heat. I missed the spur trail for Second Water spring so I took Second Water canyon up to the spring then climbed the hill to find the mine. I could see the mine from far away but from below it was difficult to spot. I worked my way in the general direction then found on old trail leading to the upper mine. Next I worked my way down the hill looking for the lower mine and found that. It looks like the bear moved out so no porridge for me. I hiked back across Second Water trail and checked out an alcove I noticed while up on the hill. It looked promising but when I got there it was clear the original roof broke away and was laying on the ground. I thought I was going away empty then noticed a few petroglyphs on a low section of the original roof which had not collapsed. I checked in the dirt and located a few pot sherds just to make sure. After that I hiked over to the Indian Paint mine. I heard there were several shafts there and I found at least 6. There was a bunch of parts and on old bed too. On the way back I thought I had seen enough but I walked up on a Gila Monster in the trail. These guys are everywhere this year. I took a detour through Garden Valley to check out the alcoves there and even left one for another day. On the hike out I went by about 30 asian hikers who could all read Chinese. I happened to be wearing the HAZ shirt that is supposed to say hikearizona in Chinese. The Arizona is correct but hike has two meanings as in tax hike. Apparently I'm for raising taxes in AZ? A few of them got a good laugh out of it so it was kinda funny. You never know what's going to happen out there. |
