Sunday was a short hike in on this passage to reconnoiter conditions in preparation for youth crews rehabbing the trail. The fire did serious damage but what burns is just the first salvo; the flooding is as bad or worse, especially for trail conditions.

We parked at the Cross F TH, newly re-signed and decked out in winter clothes, and hiked the three-quarter mile east to the AZT. Then, staying right we soon dropped into the canyon and the burned area. The trail used to stay out of the stream bed but now that is gone and the trail is in and out of the bottom of the creek. The snow covered the ground but the trail conditions were visible, pretty washed out and eroding. About a quarter-mile after it turns left, it ascends a series of short switchbacks that are now little more than a talus slope. The rains have removed the topsoil on the side slopes of the canyon and this portion of the trail as well. The inside corners of the switchbacks are all that is left, the tread is gone and only rock remains.

We went maybe a half-mile further and had seen all that was needed to decide where to put the crew. They'll work the switchbacks as that is more technical and physical than reasonable to expect volunteers to do.

The winter landscape was impressive, but it was fading fast as the south-facing slopes warmed in the sun and melted off. We looked over some potential trailhead locations on the way back and found a new, to us, Mexican restaurant for the requisite post hike feed. Didn't see anyone who recognized the Toyota ;)
