Wasn't I just here?

Well... I hadn't done a solo backpack in years and really wanted to get out for a couple days. I've camped at Bear Saddle before and really love that spot so I figured I would do it again. I decided I would head up the Y-bar and do this clockwise for once. I'd have a short first day and then I'd get to enjoy the down canyon views on Barnhardt on Saturday.

The hike in was mostly uneventful and I made good time. The only hang-up was when my bladder busted a seam and I had to stop and tape the giant hole as best I could. I luckily turned the giant leak into a trickle and had plenty of water for the hike in.

I was at Bear Saddle by lunch time. Though I quickly formed a frown. There was trash everywhere but this time it was different-- I know who to blame because its written all over. I'll not rant about it and it was too much for a backpacker to pack out so I collected all of it into a neat little pile and maybe they'll send someone on horseback to retrieve it. I generally think these people are amazing and awesome so I don't want to talk too badly about them.

After cleaning up the area and rebuilding the fire ring, I needed to try to fix my bladder. I had some patch glue for my sleeping pad and lots of medical tape and found that a combination of the two would do the trick-- no more leak!

Early in the afternoon I started hearing voices so I walked over to the higher campsite to see who had rolled in. Nobody was there. So I went back to attend to my day and started hearing voices again clear as day. I walked back over and still no one. I started scoping around and could finally see some backpackers way in the distance coming from the Peeley direction. I couldn't believe how well I could hear them chatting from that far away. They turned out to be volunteers from the conservation corps doing information gathering for the Forest Service. We talked trails and the next morning we looked over their map together.

I had some dinner and then a nice little fire to myself that night. I went to bed really early and got about 10 hours of sleep. I apparently even slept through a coyote leaving me a present of the number two variety outside my tent door. I slowly made breakfast, coffee, filled my water, and broke down camp. It was time to go.

It was a beautiful and quiet morning. I ran into a gentleman doing the entire AZT north to south on the divide. He was definitely hating the Mazzies. The overgrown trail was slowing him down and he said all the evidence of bears at Horse Camp Seep made for a nervous camp the night before. I didn't have the heart to tell him about the population in Four Peaks ;)

The rest of the hike was uneventful but it was an absolutely stunning day. I saw one more pair of dayhikers and that was it. I spotted a camp from the distance further north on the divide-- the AZT hiker had warned me it was a bunch of hunters. They were in the camping area with all the junipers just north of the Barnhardt intersection.

It was a nice quiet trip :)
