The goal for the day was Happy Jack AZT #29 as a thru hike. First we had to set up the shuttle which took extra time so got started late about 830. This section of AZT is easy by most standards with much of it consisting of old roads. There were some interesting sections along the way...lots of ponderosa pines, meadows, gates, and tanks. At the 20 mile point we took an extended break at Pine Spring...very nice meadow around the spring. There is a tank area and a concrete spring box in the meadow. When we got to the spring box there was a small bird trapped in the thick green algae water. Looked like it's wing was broken but scooped it out and put it on the grass. To our surprise within 20 minutes it had hopped up on a post, dried off and flew away. After the break we continued on and finished up just as it was getting dark. The highlight was Pine Spring area and the numerous meadow crossing thru out the hike. Also water can be tough but the best sources on this day were Pine Spring and Bargaman Park Tank. There were many other tanks along the way and given a rainy year could work as well.
