I finished up work a little early today, so I thought I would give it a go on the steeper side, hit the trailhead about 2:30. As it turns out, the Finger Rock side is not nearly as overgrown as what I encountered on the Pima side this fall so I made decent time. Got to the north lookout in 2:45 with breaks, I feel pretty good about that. Views to the north were just incredible, despite it being a hazy day. I could make out the Superstitions, Four Peaks, and everything in between. I did manage to get off trail once in the wash on the way up, I think I have done that every time I have been on this trail. I had to bushwhack my way across to rejoin the trail, a bit steep but we managed. I saw quite a few other hikers out on the lower half, and surprisingly met a couple guys up at the summit. They had set out from the FR trailhead at 8:30 and were going down the Pima side. I stopped off at the Linda Vista on the way back for the sake of it. This was a great adventure. I love hikes like this when you can hike through 3 or 4 different climate zones, go all the way from low desert scrub to mixed Pine/ Juniper/ Oak woodlands. This will definitely be on the repeat hike list, absolutely fabulous. |
