| no partners | | It is spring and time to get back out on the front range hikes! What could be more appropriate then Kimball from Finger Rock Canyon? It's a sometimes tortuously steep hike, but the beauty out here is so nice this time of year. Cool on the summit with unexpected clouds and a passing shower. The clouds reminded me of last year near Carrizo Peak in early March.
I wore my new Luna Sandals to hike this, which accounts for some of the longer time, but I did well in them after using them on Blackett yesterday. I might be able to do all of my hike in them, which would be great. I need to toughen my feet, though, as the pads are sore.
I ended up spooking a lady hiker. Actually, a collared female bighorn. She was hiking up the Finger Rock Trail, and as I saw her coming over a ridge no more than 50 feet ahead of me, she noticed me, turned, and ran away. I saw her shortly after, far, far below, and as soon as she saw me come in to view, she ran up a slope towards Pontatoc Canyon. Judging by the tracks on the trail, she had been hiking the trail for about a mile or more. Too bad she didn't want to keep on it, as I would have yielded the right of way to her, as she was the up-hill hiker. Pretty neat to see another bighorn, natural or not.
Birds were good, but best in the desert section. Limited in the traditionally excellent areas up higher, possibly due to the clouds and cool temps? I had some near the summit, but overall it was not as good as I recall in past years. I may be confusing my memory of Pima and/ or Ventana Canyon for Finger Rock, and I guess I have to hike those to know for sure. |
