Saturday morning we got a 645 start seeing quite a few elk herds in the first 5 miles. These herds are much more skittish than the tame ones at South Kaibab TH....cool to see them running through the forest. This section is very easy walking most of the way so we completed the first 14 miles to Tusayan just before lunch time. Decided to take a side trip over to the Wendy's in Tusayan for a Frosty...very nice mid hike treat
After the break we got back on trail and made the park boundary just north of Tusayan. The trail passes just to the west of the park entrance and continues north along a service road for 2 miles or so. Then it crosses the highway and meanders through the forest for about 4 miles until reaching the South Kaibab/Yaki Point turnoff. Soon after crossing the road we started to see the tourists as AZT hits the paved path along the rim. Another half mile and it hits the rim of South Kaibab trail. Strange to hike all day and see the rim of Grand Canyon in the last 10 minutes of the hike. So we did our best Chevy Chase impression and then headed for the vehicle parked at South Kaibab Trail annex parking lot. |
