The first 15 miles north from Freeman Road is particularly easy with long flat sections where the miles rapidly click away. Starting around 16 miles the trail enters the Ripsey Wash section. Whereas the first 15 miles could be considered flat and boring the Ripsey area is filled with washes, canyons, and more diverse vegetation. The highlight was the Big Hill just north of Ripsey Wash at mile 21which after topping out follows the ridgeline with great views of the Gila River, Superstitions, and Catalinas to the south. After traversing the cool ridgeline the trail drops rapidly between mile 22 and 25 down to the where it crosses the Floence-Kelvin Road. Then it's a short couple miles to the Florence-Kelvin Bridge end of AZT #15. However, there is a nice new TH that is 0.4 miles into the next section AZT #16 that we parked at as an alternative to parking at the bridge. |
