The last day and a half of the "Kinder, Gentler, Toe Tour"! On Wed. we started approx. 4 miles north of Telephone Hill, in Passage 41, and went SOBO just to get the exposed areas out of the way early in the day. Trail is easy to follow and it looks safer, more hospitable, less dreary than even a year ago! Deer really love this area and we were always coming up on a small herd. On Thursday, we took off about 8, aiming to hike NOBO out of the remaining burn area. We made the last climb of the week and it was all downhill from there! Arrived at Murrays Lake TH and wondered were the trail / lake was. (went looking for that on Friday) Gorgeous day with a few high clouds and occasional views of Vermilion Cliffs in the distance. Along here we saw more wildflowers than in the past days. Asters, dandelions, Indian Paintbrush and even a few Lupine. The pines smelled SO good as the warm sun baked them! This section was a little confusing to me. After passing the water collection area and heading downhill, I was expecting to see signs of an old gas line, as per the description. If it's there, I didn't see it. Also, there is a tank as you go down the hill that is signed "Ridge Tank" but on the map this should be Buffalo Trick Tank. The map also shows a Ridge Tank WAY off of the trail and farther northeast about equal to mile 769. But there were carsonites eventually - went 1 1/2 miles before seeing one - so I knew we were OK. A lot of road but the canyon was pretty and there was no one around so we really enjoyed this last day and the downhill! Came across rosehips just as we arrived at the gravel pit. I tried to get my sister to collect them and make me tea for the evening, but no dice! Arrived at the TH around 2ish and headed to Jacob Lake for a blackberry milkshake and a motel room! No more tenting which we were glad about since the rain came the next day!
WATER: I can't figure out the water map to the water I saw, so I'll just note it here. The tank below the wildlife collection area that the FS has named Ridge Tank has plenty of water. 50-75% full. Big Ridge Tank is dry and grassy. There are 2 metal containers (see my pics) as you go down / NOBO the canyon. The first one is pretty full but the second one is all but empty.
