Then geared up and headed into the HOWLING wind. Excellent trail. Complications found us only 5 miles in when we decided to camp. Found an excellent spot in the lea of a large granite peak just shy of Lutz Canyon trail junction. Even though the wind howled all night, we were relatively protected. Had a 2:30 am visit from 3 border patrol agents, but other than that, it was a quiet night. Took a nice rest the next day at Bathtub Springs, then back out into the howling wind. Saw some evidence of illegals passing, but the trash, although unsightly, was not as bad as I had expected. Camped the next night in a protected area at the junction of the Crest and Sunnyside trails. Beautiful hike down to Parker Canyon Lake on Monday. We opted to take the road into the lake and were glad of this choice. The next day we ran into a couple who indicated that they could not find the spur trail from the AZT to Parker Canyon Lake. We made it to the lake store just before it closed and bought some goodies, sat in the sun and enjoyed talking with the owner, Scott. If you get a chance to visit with him, you will find he is knowledgeable about the area and helpful. Stayed the night in the campground, enjoying the sounds of the lake, pit toilets and running water! Water on this passage is often and accessible. Most drainages had visible water. It would go underground for a while, then reappear. Never had a concern about running out of water. Saw 2 grouse, a deer and a snake along the trail. The next day we continued on to Passage 2, hitching a ride to the TH from the campground with a very nice Tucson firefighter and his 2 daughters. Thanks to them!!! |
