Got past hunter meadow and the hum of generators, drove up the road and pulled off and crawled in back. Rain during the night, sat in the morning in the back drinking coffee and debating whether to pack up and drive home. The rain stopped and although gloomy I decided to hike as far as I wanted. I drove on in, stopped and chatted at Chumleys' camp meeting Karl and Daisy, then went on.
Quite the wonderful day ensued. There was no one in the canyon it seemed but myself. The quiet of the fluttering leaves, the sounds of running water, a lot for this time of year. The sky was gloomy and the photography challenging but I did not forget the special feeling this place has for this time of year. I left the trail soon as I usually do and walked the canyon bottom, getting wet, but it was warm and I did not care. Magical leaf litter, and the hulking moss covered boulders and dense foliage did the trick. I did not make it to the Aspen, as it rained enough to make me don my poncho, which is ok for walking on a trail but a pain off trail. The color popped incredibly in the sullen light and I really enjoyed this change, opposite the day before. I couldn't pass this place up, after having seen what has happened to other fall favorites. Who knows how many years I'll have yet here, I hope a few. |
