Peeley TH". There were some fall colors along the trail as we descended to Deer Creek. The area near Deer Creek has gotten very overgrown compared to when I was first here in Feb 2010. At that time someone had groomed the trail from the Deer Creek crossing part way up to the Mt Peeley TH so that it looked like a trail in a city park. Now that section of trail is so overgrown it would be difficult to follow if someone hadn't marked it with large cairns.
We did some searching near the creek for signs of the Gowan Camp or the Windsor Camp. Somewhere I read that this area was homesteaded and vegetables and apple trees were grown - now I can't seem to find where I read that. There seems to be some confusion about Davey Gowan having his camp here versus his cabin site in the South Fork of Deer Creek. We did find the remains of a rock wall or fence and maybe the remains of a rock cabin foundation. I also found what appeared to be an apple tree. The picture of the leaves looks very much like apple leaf pictures I found on the internet. Would like to have spent more time snooping around this area but had to be back home by late afternoon. |
