| partners | | Wowser! I have never hiked this far is a single outing. The closest I have come is Mt. Whitney. My last hike of any length was Humphreys back in September/October? I will definitely be feeling this the next couple of days.
I ran into JJ the other day and we talked about a few things and the AZT came up. I have never done any segment of it and was ready to start working on it this year. He made some suggestions and it just so happens that we were both free today. We met at the Circle K in Superior (after I figured out I was parked at the wrong gas station) and switched vehicles. He was going to head from the north to south and I had the opposite direction.
Upon arriving at the northern trailhead I had the first mishap of the day. I literally could not find the trail. I bounced around the road for roughly 20 minutes before I stumbled back to the trailhead to reevaluate. I knew the trail headed south. I had seen the trail marker sign, with a trail shooting due north. I did not realize that that was the actual trail. Ugh.
The rest of the trip was easy going navigation wise with the exception of the large wash near the halfway point. It took a bit of effort to find the trail on the opposite side because my Fenix was acting up.
With about 7 miles to my legs started giving up. The blistering pace I had maintained earlier, that led me to crossing paths with JJ at almost the halfway point, took a big drop off. My legs just aren't conditioned for this kind of distance. It is something I will have to build up as I tackle the segments of the AZT.
Overall, it was an amazing experience and I am looking forward to the journey ahead! |
