The bed was too soft and warm and the drive a little longer than estimated so the hike didn't start until 8:20a. A few years back I would have pushed the pace but now I just call it as I go. The campaign was in decent shape but there are a few washed out areas and a few turns/crossing to watch for. The trail was a little overgrown approaching the junction with Fireline trail. The Fireline trail is overgrown at first but seemed better the higher up I hiked.
Once up on the ridge by Pine Mountain, time was on my side so I gave the off trail route a go. There is some manzanita but most of it is avoidable. I found a small old ruin and hit the summit. The views are nice but the summit itself is nothing special.
After hiking back to the Fireline trail, I continued on toward Reavis Ranch and saw a grey fox looking back at me. It appeared he was waiting for me to pass and then crossed the trail. I filtered a quart of water at Reavis Creek and moved on.
Upon arriving at Reavis Ranch the campsite was mostly empty. Karl, John9L and Claire were setting up camp so I talked with them a bit, ate my sandwich and decided to continue on to beat the sunset. There I finished was just after 5p. FR 449A has been graded and the sand was mostly pushed to the side. From what I heard Chumley and crew hiked the same loop as I did but probably in the same direction so we never passed. |
