Sunday/Monday last week was brutal for the Potato Patch/Millsite Village area. A freak spring snow storm with heavy winds punished us with 2 to 3 feet of snow...with hundreds of downed trees and power lines. We were without power for almost a week. Tritle was not spared from any of the mayhem. The shear volume of downed trees on Tritle was amazing.
My weekly Thursday's 10k run, I run right by Tritle. Could not believe just how much snow still remained on the north face. With the season coming to an end I figured I'd better get my "snow hike" fix in before its gone. BobP (& Bruno) would have LOVED todays adventure. At times, snow drift was 3 to 5 feet thick of wet heavy crunchy slushy snow (although I only sunk to my knees).
Tritle packs a punch and always always delivers. This was just on the assault up the east ridgeline. The freestyle drop down the north face was completely insane. I had ski pants and snow boots on so I could have cared less. My 4 legged hike partner followed my usual route up to summit. I wanted to avoid the "drop in" to the Hassayampa drainage with the rock climb and overshot my usual drop and came face to face with a direct line to the Hassayampa Falls. What a treat! I've never seen so much water in the Hassayampa before.

And the dam. Hassayampa Dam has been overflowing since NOV 2016:

Route Scout locked up on me so sorry no route with photo GPS locations.
Usually I climb up to the Senator/Maxton Mill and putz around but the snow gave a total "leg day" work out. So I just kept going up the Hassayampa... normal "trailish" area was completely submerged.
I give this hike a 10. |
