We were the only ones out hiking in the upper Anchas as it seemed and definitely the first on some of the trails we hit as our footprints were the first to crunch the fresh snow at the 6,800-7,000 level besides the deer and pursuing lion tracks we clearly saw.
Had a bit of rock-slide scare during an off trail traverse on steep slopes but those always sound worse than they are and we gave each other space during the section so no real harm was done.
I forgot my boots at home and made the hike in old Walmart tennis shoes with literally no traction left which resulted in a record 9 falls for me and one trekking pole snapped in half .
The ruins being built into a cave were some of the most interesting I've ever encountered, the main room with the natural vaulted ceilings was one of my favorite parts!
Very curious as to how they shape 100 lbs timbers into cylindrical logs and the twine tying them together preserved for hundreds of years just added to my awe and amazement.
A fulfilling and great day in the Sierra Anchas and shout out to my new friend Beth who breezed through this hike like a champ and even climbed up sketchy vertical cliff walls to see another cave, I'll make sure she is a new Hazzer ASAP as she's one of the real ones. |
