Cool temps and shade made for a pleasant walk up Super Trail to Josephine Saddle. From there, we took Old Baldy up, as we weren't sure what the gathering clouds were going to do, and summiting earlier seemed to be the best choice. At Baldy Saddle, the clouds were dark, but not threatening rain. It was a foggy hike up to the summit; views were minimal, but it was a real treat to sit on the summit surrounded by a sea of fog. We took a snack break until we got chilly, then headed back down. Back at Baldy Saddle, we decided to stick with the plan and took Super Trail down. At times, the sun peeked through the clouds and it was muggy, but we had cloud cover most of the way. We heard a few distant rumbles of thunder, but nothing of concern. Back at Josephine Saddle, we took Old Baldy Trail back down to the parking lot. Lots of water at the springs and drainages all along the trail. Didn't see much wildlife, mostly just lizards. Nice day, and no traffic on the drive back to Phoenix. |
