| no partners | | The last time I had spent a day of hiking in a true running First Water Creek was on Christmas Day 2008, and figuring 10 years was far too long a wait so I took advantage of the rare opportunity.
First Water Road was in MUCH better condition than expected but Horse Staging was already a mud-hole. And of course, just as I was heading out on foot, some guy in a pickup had to drive into the lot, spin around throwing a bunch of mud around then driving back out. I guess some guys just can't resist getting their truck all muddy... at the expense of the mucky parking lot, no less.
Expecting plenty of rain I wore my long-unused Teva's and a rain-jacket. Oh sure, it claims to be breathable-yet-waterproof... Yeah right! It breathed plenty of water along with the air and I was soaked through and through.
But no matter, it did nothing to dampen my resolve and I pressed on. And since I brought my Olympus TG-2 Tough Guy camera I proceeded to film as I walked along/in First Water Creek.
(I've edited a 'First-Water medley' down to 15 minutes, but since I held the camera in one hand while navigating the water and boulders it may provoke nausea while viewing... so I probably won't post it)
It was probably 4 years since I visited the mine on Hackberry Mesa so I made sure to add the side-trip. I didn't have a flashlight so I didn't bother so go in.
Making sure to take in as much walking-in-the-creek as possible, ultimately the hike ended as a weird double-figure-eight. But no matter the shape of the hike, it was a great experience... minus the muddy-lot at the end. |
