Not sure where to go and what to do, just get in the Jeep and head south. Favorable forecast and the temps were in the 80's only but high humidity, great clouds, no rain as I drove out. Drove a road I usually avoid as goes right to the border on a ridgeline and has heavy surveillance and probable illegal usage. I parked possibly in Mexico several hundred yards from a border patrol monitoring station. I saw my goal and took off on brushy ridgelines on a short hike to get to another border monument. This one metal and hard to see, not that big and blended in with the terrain. Gorgeous views into Mexico and back toward the Atascosa range.

Some would say get a GPS so you know where you are; what would be the fun in that?? Anyway got back to Jeep and drove out and was not intercepted but I am sure I was glassed; if I had come back with like 10 other people that would have been one thing.
Drove on, stopped at a mining area. Another spot I misjudged where I thought a mine was and drove a nasty short section of road for nothing. Then hiked down into a drainage into an area I will call the mini slots, just a rise of slickrock with some running water from previous evenings' storm and pools. Some of the pools were deep and I enjoyed the short wander.
Yet another area drove a road to a locked gate with 5 locks on it and a sign "no motor vehicles" and depictions of several motorized vehicles. Didn't look like a forest service sign. Anything blocked off with 5 locks must be good so I took a camera and a water bottle. Not too far along took a really old well graded road barely visible now to an idyllic tank and found an open mine adit, didn't have a light. It won't take much to go back there, and more to explore with a pack on.

Drove on and lots of mud holes on the road, so is raining near the border, still green but weeds now going to seed so starting to brown up. At least some place is getting the welcome moisture.
Such a favorite place, and great exploration when I don't want to go far.
