The road ends and then the pack goes on and the route finding starts. The canyon far below and a break in the cliffs announced by two piles of bear poop, the way on down. At the bottom a pool awaits. I had been in this canyon before years ago, but times passes and I wanted to finish this large system.
I went upcanyon, mainly because it looked interesting and I could not remember the details. For sure didn't go in this way.
Rock hopping galore, lots of grapevines, poison ivy, etc. The canyon mostly dry but some slickrock and pools in a few sections. Stopper pourover with pool and scenic log. Out and up, one airy step over on a thin ledge with a good 40 feet of exposure, but great handholds. Back in and on up the canyon, a familiar short tight slickrock section with step down pools. The canyon becoming shallower, I went up and out, and cross countried back to the car. You think you have come a long way but of course had not, I am slow with bouldery canyon bottoms and wanting to take pictures.
Drove to car camp, had a stealth hike in mind but was defeated by the presence of other campers. Will wait until I am retired and can come here during the week.
Back down the road. Really weird a great road, rocky, but you could take a rental car on it. Then it just ends, in a broad turn around and a almost unreadable sign of the road end. A quad track went on down, I decided to not take the Toyota on it. Walked down and decided it would be good for the next day.
Early down the quad trail. Ended on a bench with the canyon still pretty far below. Walked along the cliff edge and an old built trail went down on a nice traverse. Now I was at the end of the canyon I had been in the day before, before it runs into Cherry Creek, here just a brushy treed gully. I walk upcanyon, the growth here very thick, with beautiful benches graced with towering pines reaching for the sun. Gentle discreet pools, a little running water. The elk trails very good here, helped a lot on the journey. Again the canyon dry and bouldery, water gone underground. Interesting where there were pools obvious major animal traffic. The canyon was quiet, no sign of man, no trash, footprints or old fire rings.
As the walls started getting lower and it was getting brushier I turned around. I now only have a short part to finish this canyon out, and I know how to get to that. The only bummer was the drive home, due to a traffic problem it ended up with me taking over 6 hours to get back, but sometimes that is the price of admission.
