I started out thinking I would hike to Miners Needle and take some sunrise pictures and head back the same way. But, the low clouds on the eastern horizon made the sunrise a non-event. So, I thought I would just climb up to the saddle for a better view. Then, I thought, you know, I am not that far from Red Tanks Trail/Upper LaBarge Canyon, maybe I should just head over there? But, luckily, my brain overruled my heart. That would have added another 5-6 miles of hiking. So, I thought which way? Back down the Dutchman? Or make a proper Loop and take Bluff Springs back. Well, Bluff Springs won out and so I ended up doing 9.4 miles of the Miners Needle Loop.

I did ok on it. My ankle held up surprisingly well. The heat was getting up there at the end and the humidity was bad all morning. Just over 5 hours total, a little slower than my usual pace. So, I am still not quite 100% yet.

The Woodbury Fire made it to the Dutchman Trail on this hike, just north of the Miners Saddle. Lots of burnt up hillsides. The saguaros that are not dead will be soon where the fire burned. The only thing blooming right now is the grass that fueled this fire in the first place and cat claw. The acrid smell of the fire was everywhere in this section. Very depressing in there.

Other than that area, it was the usual amazing loop hike. It is still VERY dry out there and very overgrown with grass and cat claw - the worst I have ever seen on the sections north of Miners Needle.
