Stayed in on the rainy Tuesday conjuring up a grandiose hiking plan for today. Thought I would try to take Jacob’s crosscut trail from the trailhead , through the park and on around to the southwest side of Superstition Mountain. From there go up Monument Canyon to the plane crash impact site and see if feasible to slide over to peak 3845 and come down Siphon Draw to complete a lasso loop. Left itinerary with my wife with plan to be back for dinner ,with guests, so out the door at the crack of dawn which is 0900 on retiree time. Geared up and hiking by 1000 deciding 1400 was turnaround decision time. A little humid at the beginning with clouds lingering seeming to accumulate in Siphon Draw, no name and Monument canyons. Lots of blooming Chuparosa along Jacobs crosscut and hummingbirds , easy going trail made it to the turnoff for Broadway Cave in about 1.5 hours. Turned up the now more rocky trail meandering through the saguaro forest with the Broadway Cave looming above. Turned left at the junction for Monument Canyon and proceeded up, arrived at the ruins ie. chimney , a family was posted there, at this point had passed by 4 other hikers on crosscut as well as one bow hunter. Did not see anyone else all day until back on the portion of Jacob’s trail in the park. Proceeding up this Canyon exceeded my expectations on challenging. Felt like I was walking on and around bowling ball boulders interspersed with catclaw and cacti, tried to follow barely visible cairns some leading up and down multiple small washes but not always helpful . After about 1.5 miles and 2.5 hours of this energy depleting fun I was only at the base of the middle ridge of the canyon and at my decision time. Let’s turn around now and save it for another day :( , fortunately due to the sun setting on the way back made for some nice pictures of the canyons even with the phone. Should have noticed the guide stats indicate Monument Canyon is 5 hours one way not round trip , my wife commented that my plan should have been for my 10 year younger and 10lb lighter self :D
