Seems like it rained recently, first hint was standing water in the low points, the washes, along Peralta Road. Knew it would be a mob at the trailhead but still managed to snag a spot in the overflow lot. Could hear the water flowing in the creek on the way to the trailhead. Joined the crowd heading up Peralta trail , spent more energy than I should have trying to keep up with the younger folks on the trail. Headed over to the lone pine, had thought about doing Barks Canyon sometime later so decided to explore a bit of the upper route today. Returning to the Cave Trail stopped for a break near Geronimo's Cave, while there two couples separately walked by , seems strange to see hikers staring at their phones to find their way instead of looking at the spectacular surroundings. After the break as I was descending devils slide I could hear voices off to the left toward Barks Canyon , soon the couples had joined up and were heading toward the correct direction. I nearly caught up with them getting ready to ascend up toward Cathedral Rock. I’m not able to hike downhill while wearing my sunglasses which are bifocals so I had removed them , now that I’m going up again as I went to put them on they weren’t still attached the front of my pack . Since they weren’t of the cheap variety decided to go back and look. Made it back just below Geronimo Cave to where I was last certain I had them with no luck. Turned back again retracing my steps and eureka I found them a few feet off the route I had just traversed, maybe going down it was easier to see. After being entertained by rescue helicopter buzzing the basin proceeded down the trail.Back on Bluff Springs Trail headed down to lower Barks Canyon , thought about returning by this route but the water flow and pools with its surrounding vegetation made me realize that progress was going to be too slow. Bushwhacked my way back up to Bluff Springs Trail and returned on it ,not my favorite the descent of cardiac hill. Now I need to go back when the water flow lessens.
