At least President’s Day meant no road work delays on 88 on the way to the start line at Canyon Lake trailhead. Left the lot with one hiker stalking me until the viewpoint for La Barge Canyon met a family there and obliged with a photo shoot. Saw 2 backpackers coming up the hill ,after camping at second water spring area,as I started down. Only saw 3 other hikers at the second water trail junction and no one else until back at the the viewpoint. Water in the beds of La Barge and Boulder Creek with little flow so not difficult to cross. Definitely warming up after leaving Boulder Creek , had carried about 2 liters of water, a liter of Gatorade and a thermos of coffee ,managed to finish it all. Last time I did a summit of Battleship there was a couple I teamed up with, this time no one else around. Stowed my pack in an alcove and took the Gatorade with me. After completing a couple of the climbing obstacles ,walking the ridgeline and crossing over the narrow bridge my memory of the route was refreshed enough, feeling certain no one else was on the mountain I decided not to proceed further and retreated back down. Retrieved my pack and headed down to the box , unfortunately the helpful breeze wasn’t penetrating to here. Gorgeous spot as usual, not a ton of water but more than last time I was here, no wildlife but could hear but not see a large bee swarm on leaving the box.On the boulder hopping expedition back to Boulder Canyon trail stepped on a loose rock and landing on my back , unfortunately my iliac crest managed to crush my thermos bottle . Slowed down by back spasms whenever bending or leaning forward the rest of the way,to avoid those motions with boulder crawling led to some unfortunate catclaw heavy route choices. Back to the top of the hill a couple of young guys there requested a photo, with the La Barge canyon background. Apparently looking like a extra in a horror movie with all the dried blood on my arms they wide eye asked if I was ok, advised them better than the bobcat. Finished up a little before sunset, good since I forgot my headlamp and phone battery was at 13%. Love the views on this route, a little cooler weather and would have been perfect, still another great day in the Supes. |
