Cool and windy today up to the top of the first ridge and again near the head of the canyon and ridgeline, calm and quiet in between, changing layers was the name of the game. Always a good sign when you can hear the water flow before seeing it and so it was on approaching the large multi mortar rock. Nice waterfall exiting the petroglyphs pools, sounds of running water continued most of the way up the canyon . Upper pools were also filled and discharging with a nice waterfall. The rains and running water made the trek up more slippery on the the rocks but softened some of the scree covered trail. Before reaching the last waterfall is a rockslide that the water runs under and when there is enough flow can hear a whistling musical like sound in the gaps between the rocks, from my one physics class suspect it has to do with Bernoulli principal. Once up the steep section and on the ridge line briefly braved the wind blast to view Weavers and 4 peaks then went over to a campsite area overlooking HC. Had a snack break and found a relatively flat rock to lay back on, sun exposed not wind exposed with my jacket on ended up falling asleep. Us retirees need our midday naps. Woke up hearing voices and being disoriented took a moment to realize I was hearing 3 out of sight hikers below me going down HC. Between the nap and the wind my motivation to travel the ridgeline evaporated and I started back down, never caught up to the other hikers. Saw no one else until nearing the jojoba hedges when met a couple that was on the way up. Couple of dozen folks sitting and or milling about enjoying the sights and sounds of water flow around the petroglyphs. Always enjoy hiking this canyon particularly the solitude above the petroglyphs and with the water flowing. |
