Mark and I took a drive out to Top of the World for a hike to an old ghost town named Bellevue. We parked on an unnamed forest road just east of Top of the World, about 2/3 of a mile in after leaving highway 60. The hike continues along the forest road before intersecting with another forest road (N Hutton Peak Rd) that would take us to Bellevue. Mark has hiked out here before and enjoyed the area, which has a rich mining history. I enjoyed it, too. The route we took is mostly used by ATV traffic, but bears appear to like it as well. Plenty of bear scat along the way. There were also recent bear tracks that Mark spotted as we were approaching Bellevue.

When we reached Bellevue, we stopped for a shady relief break and had a snack, drank some fluids before scouting around the area. Nothing here now but an old barn/warehouse and a very large junk pile. Still, I always enjoy seeing a slice of the old west. @Kingsnake hiked out here in January 2014 from a different direction. His photo set captures much more than what we saw today. The trip out and back was a very good workout. Lots of ups and downs. I think I was more tired today than I was after my hike to Humphreys saddle on Friday.

It was warmer than expected at 6:20ish and getting hot by the time we finished midmorning. The air was relatively clear compared to the Valley and surrounding areas. That was a plus. The breeze we hoped for to keep that evaporative cooling working was spotty, but it showed up when we needed it. I drank two liters of water and a 20oz bottle of gatorade to keep the sweat rolling out. I drank another 20oz on the way back.

Fun trip!
