It is also where I took my first sunlit saguaro picture, which later became my avatar. I wanted to go out to see how my old friend looked. Not as good as I hoped, but not as bad as some of its neighbors is the quick and easy answer. Only time will tell.
The only thing for certain is that a large section in the middle of this wonderful trail is burned badly. So very sad.
After visiting the saguaro, I went up to an overlook at the top of a rise just before the trail descends down to the Terrapin junction. I stopped and had a snack while checking out the carnage in Barks Canyon from above, reminiscing about a better day on this trail, a hike with @denniswilliams, @The_Eagle and @joebartels when Dennis shared some of his favorite whiskey at this same spot.
I hiked out near the Terrapin junction and thought about continuing on, but I'd seen enough. I headed back, stopping once more to see my favorite saguaro before finishing up.
Peralta road has been recently graded and is suitable for all vehicles, but it doesn't appear that anyone cares. One vehicle when I arrived at 5:45am, two when I left. |
