The mile plus on FR289 is rougher than normal, but there was a road crew working on it when I left. Campsites are bing used (I said campgrounds at first) but the restrooms were not open.

I was surprised that I hadn't been on this trail in nearly three years. I must have forgotten how steep it is, especially the last mile to rim road. That's just mean. That's when I quote John Muir: "People ought to saunter in the mountains - not 'hike!" A saunter was the best I could do today.

In spite of the daunting incline, this is one of my faves and I try to hike it at least once during the summer. There is a fair amount of downed trees on the trail but not terrible. One section about two miles in is chewed up a bit. The rest of the trail is in pretty good shape.

I started early today (8:30). Temps still in the low 60's with a nice breeze. This trail is hard enough without adding in the heat factor. I planned to check See Spring on the way back down but I had a good enough workout already. I'm sure it was flowing in abundance; there was quite a bit of water in the creeks down low. The lovely melody of continuous birdsong was also in abundance.

I spoke with a fisherman from the Valley getting ready to try his luck on Christopher Creek and two hikers heading up as I was finishing up. Otherwise I had this all to myself. Since everyday is like Saturday for me at the moment, why not go on Tuesday.

It was absolutely gorgeous throughout the hike. No humidity and no bugs. It's a good springtime hike right now.
