The plan was an "out-and-back" - following Forest Service Road 8854 until it reached US Hwy 191 coming south out of Alpine, then return.
Boots on the road at about 5:30. Saw numerous elk and calves along the way. Why is it when you try to get a picture, they're always behind a tree?!
The first 2/3rds(?) are hiking in pines. Very pretty and cool. I crossed six streamlets along the way with enough of a water flow that one could easily filter and fill a water bottle.
The last third was in "recovering"(?) forest. A large forgotten-named forest fire burned through this area several years ago, and the forest is gradually recovering with scrub oak, New Mexico locust, etc. I'll admit I'm no botanist, but the brush was very thick and healthy. The elk seemed to be using it for daytime sleeping spots.
A quick 3 minute sprinkle livened up the hike towards the end, helping cool me off, and keep the temperatures down.
All-in-all, a nice hike. I really enjoyed it! |
