As a reward for making good choices, my granddaughter, aged 3, asked for, "A hike with Grandpa." :y:

We thought about the Pima Canyon trailhead on the east side of South Mountain, but the earliest we could get there was 8:00, and we were afraid there would be no parking spots left, so we chose the First Water trailhead, instead.

So, Dad, Mom, granddaughter, younger granddaughter, aged 17 months, my Trail Angel extraordinaire, and I arrived at the trailhead about 8:15. Only a dozen cars or so, and two volunteers(?) guarding the trailhead :). One appeared to be wearing a ranger uniform.

We threw on the boots, shrugged on the camelback loaded with ice water, and hit the trail.

As you can imagine, the three year old was up and down the trail, stopping frequently to examine something fascinating on the trail, then off running again. I just watched, amused with her antics.

We turned left at the #104/#236 junction. At the "flat, wide spot" past the dry creek bed, my son-in-law put the 17 month old down, and let her run along the trail for a bit.

I left it up to her mom to determine how far to walk. She knows her daughter better than I do. A little ways up the first hill, Mom said it was time to turn around and head back.

My granddaughter seemed to still have a ton of energy when arrived back at the trailhead. All-in-all, I think she had a good time. I guess that's the most important thing.

I took the opportunity to chat with my Trail Angel extraordinaire about hiking from Peralta trailhead to First Water. She said she would think about it. I think that would be fun!
