I was "just" the chauffeur for this hike! My son wanted to do a "shake down" hike for his upcoming AZT hike in mid-October. South Rim to Pine Trailhead. My daughter (his older sister) wanted to tag along and use the hiking equipment she's bought (like a Zenbivy quilt).

That's the reason for no mileage, time or pack weight.

We drove up from Mesa Friday afternoon, the 12th, and slept overnight at the Double Springs Campground, Site #4. It was a nice shady site. Very deep, too. We could get away from the road.

The next morning, Saturday the 13th, I dropped them off at Gooseberry Springs trailhead at about 8:10am. My daughter's goal was to maintain a 3.0 mph pace. Route Scout (thanks, Joe!) announces one mile split statistics, so my daughter would use those announcements to judge her pace. It is about 12 miles back to the campground. So I figured about 5 hours hiking time, rest stops included.

I set up a "Trail Angel" rest stop, for any AZT thru hikers that might pass by. I had apples, oranges, and peaches. Water, chips, and a power bank to recharge any electronics. No luck. Not a single thru hiker came by. I was disappointed!

At 12:55, they rolled into the campground, crossing the two wooden plank bridges. At lunch time, they decided to NOT stop for lunch since they were so close. Just a shade under 5 hours.

I gave away most of the peaches, and some apples and oranges to a nice RVing couple the next site over. They were nice and chatty. I appreciated the company and encouragement.

Oh well, hopefully, I'll have better luck next time!
