Not as crowded as the trails near the trailheads and yet not as totally isolated as the more remote trails. I actually got parking at the First Water trail head for an 8:30 start. The weather was great in the mid 60's with lots of sun.
The trails are in good condition and easy to follow as is expected in west Superstitions. Heading down into La Barge on Second Water is really rocky and Boulder Canyon lives up to its name. Were planning on adding Battleship Mountain but I realized we would be cutting it close timewise so we opted out. Took a lunchbreak at the Bull Pass Trail junction with the Dutchman Trail. Picked this spot even though it was not on the loop because I wanted to sit and eat near the creek in the shade. Headed back along the Dutchman to the First Water trail head. Particularly nice views of Weavers Needle along this section of trail.
There was water in Second Water Canyon mainly in small pools, Boulder had a good flow but not enough to make the numerous creek crossings difficult. First water had water in pools but no flow to speak of (at least along the section on the Dutchman). Even though I had done multiple versions of this loop hike it still peaks my interest. Not counting the first part of Second Water to the Black Mesa Trail junction we only saw 3 people on the trails and they were in Boulder Canyon. |
