The project will move the AZT off 2.8 miles of ugly road walk onto 3 miles of sweet single-track. Matt Roberts of Flagline Trails provided the finer details of why to build, and how to design, trails. Students then applied their new wisdom to three real-world applications, including a gnarly wash crossing and two routes around or across a large bedrock hillside. ATA provided food service and participants camped on site, where the views of the mountains were incredible. The weather cooperated in spite of earlier threats of snow and cold, which did not materialize. A large male bovine hung out nearby, and visited the campsite during the night.
ATA’s Trail Skills Institute will revisit the area March 29-30, with Module 5, “Trail Construction,” when the group will build the southern approach to the gnarly wash crossing. |
