I know this hike and really like it, but I would not attempt it alone, so this gave me a great opportunity and I signed on. Fritzski's Hike Description is excellent, but this can be a confusing hike for someone who hasn't done it. The Ravine is definitely a challenging bushwhack and today it was really overgrown with brush. Fortunately the ground was damp, so the scree wasn't as bad as it normally is. I don't think you ever take the same route up or down the Ravine. The best you can hope for is the lat long for the bottom and the lat long for the top and do your best. I still don't have a GPS Route that I feel comfortable posting for anyone to follow. Today because of the brush, on the way up we worked our way on the left side to the mine then crossed over to the right side to get to the top. Coming down the right side was more visible so we mostly came down the right side. We debated doing the bushwhack up to Dead Womans Cave and then over the top of Black Mesa to the Black Mesa Trail, but decided to stick to the Black Mesa Trail. This reminded me why I rarely hike the Black Mesa Trail, it is sort of boring. |
