| no partners | | Another decent weather forecast (!) so I again took "one last trip" north before it gets too hot.
On the morning drive up decided I'd try for a day permit for the Devil's Playground and was surprised how quick and easy that was to get at the PEFO Visitor center. My plan was to walk around the lower part of Lithodendron Wash and apparently that permit is needed to park at the designated lot. That whole area: National Park (recently acquired Plots), State Trust, private property, etc. is confusing to navigate (particularly legally).
Anyway the big wash dominates here. My first stop was at a modern ruin site. I've read that this was the station for the Star Stage Line and may have been used from the 1870’s until about 1885. This private stage route followed the same approximate path as the Beale Wagon Road and later Route 66. The park service did some stabilization/clean-up of the site in 2009.
The rocks around it contain a number of modern inscriptions which are fun to look for. I also wanted to search for ancient petroglyphs and continued along the rocky edges, dodging private property. Eventually I was lucky enough to find some nice ones.
In planning the trip I noticed I would be not too far from a very nice petroglyph site I'd been to before. So I moved further upstream and visited that one as well. I include a few pictures from that visit.
Good weather, good day. |
