| no partners | | I took the summer off - too hot. But with 79deg forecast for Holbrook off I went. I had one planned hike "in the can" but came up with this one about 8PM the night before I left.
I had some info there were petroglyphs in this canyon near Holbrook. I wasn't sure if the dirt roads would be gated but it was no problem. I had sketched a route entering near the top of the canyon and then walking it's length but when I got there I noticed there were more walls upstream and figured I better check them out or I might later regret it. Glad I did.
I found some impressive alcoves, one with a manmade dam on top, with nice petroglyphs. Too bad that the best panel was inaccessible to me. (I got psyched to give it a go about 4 times but I was not climbing down and even if I got there not sure the view would be great - too close or too angled.) So I had to settle to gaze from afar. Anyway most of the glyphs today were upstream from my starting point.
I enjoyed the longer walk downstream to where the walls started to disappear. Lots of elk sign (I saw one) and plenty of interesting water erosion features and water holes. I found a few more petroglyphs at the bottom. Looped back to the car past a big herd of black cows (one oreo). Good day, a little rain, not too hot. |
