I've been having fun lately walking around east of the Petrified Forest. There are miles and miles of mesa edge which is nice to walk along (flat, hard, little vegetation) and there's a good chance you'll pass some petroglyphs or the like. I sketched out another 10+ miles to check out and headed up again.

Overall the "petroglyphs/mile" was lower than on most of my other visits but there were a couple good spots that kept it interesting. The highlight of the day (or of the year) was finding a half-buried stone axe head. Most impressive artifact I ever found. Just so happened I was experimenting with video today (oh-oh) so here's a Youtube: [ youtube video ]

Continuing from that find I came across the best petroglyph area of the day and then visited a (reputed) Chaco-outlier ruin that I knew about. (A recent thesis exists.) Another good day up there.
