| no partners | | Second day up north. I got a clue to a location from an index of ~30,000 Rock Art slides donated by the late Harold Widdison to the Museum of Northern Arizona. It was a vague clue, but that's the best kind.
Worth mentioning that Harold Widdison (b.1935) was one of those exceptional outdoorsmen who gravitated to faculty spots at NAU - his subject was Medical Sociology. Ekkehart Malotki (b.1938) is another NAU petroglyph scholar who is apparently still active - his subject is Languages (German, Latin, and Hopi). And of course there are the AZ canyoneers/mountaineers Harvey Butchart (b.1907) and Bob Packard (b.1937), both NAU mathematicians. Impressive folks.
Anyway, I've been frustrated before by travel barriers around Winslow but this time I just parked at a road closed barrier and started walking. Fingers crossed I'd find something worthwhile out in the ranch country.
Eventually I got to some shallow canyons with rock walls and could start looking. I stumbled on to the odd petroglyph and ended up at a real nice site. Far exceeded my limited expectations.
Best kind of glyph hunt. |
