| no partners | | 0700 start. Took a clockwise loop around the boulevard trails out of First Water. Stating the obvious, there is no water on this loop. I took the Stoker trail down to Second Water Spring. It was dry also. There are a couple of frog pools surrounding the reeds below the spring, but not worth filtering unless you’re desperate.
What I like about this big loop hike are the sights along the way. There are wilderness monuments around just about every bend, keeping the excitement level high, tempting you towards something more challenging along the way. Like Battleship Mountain. A hike in the Supes is always a good time, especially in the morning. Just need some rain to make it spectacular.
The trails are in better shape than expected. Occasional cat’s claw will nip at the shins on Boulder Canyon but it’s not overgrown. Those headed for Battleship can wear shorts. The rest of the hike along Boulder Canyon trail isn’t bad. Dutchman is good all the way back to the trailhead, with a wee bit of thorny stuff grabbing at you in the last (first) couple of miles.
For a Saturday with nice weather, I thought I might see more people hiking. I saw about a dozen total, most within a mile of the trailhead coming and going. Only a handful of cars when I started and finished. |
