Another short hike in Cienega Creek, this time the section through Pantano Station and Interstate 10. Fairly easy scenic hike along Cienega Creek. The settlement of Pantano Station was built in 1858 as a stage coach stop and later in 1880 a train station. Originally on the south side of the creek but in 1887 a flood forced them to move the town to the North side of the creek. Only a few foundations, a water tank and cemetery are all that remain today. Very interesting history. South of the freeway Cienega creek changes from a Marsh/riparian area to more of a desert wash which continues on this way for another 3 miles before turning back into a riparian area. The creek was dry but muddy in sections.
