This designation (bike paths) may be a tad misleading, since these paths are open to all. That being said, many of these “trails” are unappealing. So the quicker the method of transportation the better. Unfortunately for me, my running days in 100 degree temperatures is coming to close. The best I could muster was a half hearted jog. I parked at 51st Ave and Cactus using a McDonalds as a starting point. Got on the “trail” a little after 9am.
I took the paved path from 51st to 75th Ave. Not much to say. I had residences on one side and the canal on the other. The first .3 miles from Cactus the canal is a large cement channel, but then transitions to a greenbelt. Currently, it is more like a yellow belt. With one exception, (between Thunderbird and 59th Ave) the greenbelt is not maintained and suffers to the whims of the weather. There are a few benches along the way, as well as info signs that have been sun faded and occasional struggling trees that have seen better days. The exception has a well maintained green area, basketball courts and a small playground. Near here, there is also a frisbee golf course that in certain seasons might be fun to play.
Not many users out today. Encountered 4 bikers and 1 walker. Went under 4 bridges, 3 of the them had people sheltering from the sun. Can’t blame them. Saw quail and 4 squirrels. |
