Early morning visit to the Arizona Canal. Continuing to make my way east. Picked up from where I left off from last time. Went from 7th St. to 24th St. Got on the “trail” a little after 5am. I was greeted by two coyotes who were sharing my path. Apparently they are not a fan of the underpasses either as they crossed over 7th St. right in front of me.

I started off on the center path (the trail that is between the dry diversionary channel and the flowing canal). I prefer having the dirt beneath my feet when possible. I actually used the underpasses today. Lot of traffic keeps them obstacle free. At 16th St. the underpass changes to the west side of the canal, so you need to take a bridge over the canal if you want to keep using the underpasses. This worked out fine as there was a decent dirt path on the west side of the canal. (I’ve found on a few of these stretches that with the exterior paths, it’s either pavement or weeded angled slopes). Around Maryland, you lose the pavement and it becomes a hard, dirt track. Turned around at 24th St.

Comments: On the way back I briefly checked out Granada Park. It looked as if a lot of trail users were using that area as a parking spot. Pretty cool view of Piestewa from this location. There is some cool bench art work that bookends the 51. Seems to be weathering the area pretty well. Some of the biggest trees that you’ll see on this trail are right around 12th St. Giant sycamores. Very impressive. Noticed Sun Circle signs starting appearing from 7th street to 24th. Not sure if they started making an appearance prior to 7th street. Lot of users out this morning…24 hikers, 21 runners and 19 bikers. Nice mixture. Wildlife was just the two coyotes and a bunch of canal ducks.
