| no partners | | Early morning hike along the canal. Continued my trek towards the east. Picked up where I left off, starting from the 1-17 and hiking up to 7th street. The trail starts out with the same type of configuration as on the west side. Going north to south; there is a paved walking path, cement diversionary channel, paved/dirt path, flowing canal, and another paved path on the south side of the canal. The paved/dirt path is the way to go in my opinion. This gives you the option of walking on dirt (which is always my preference), plus this gives you direct access to the underpasses. On previous hikes, (further to the west), I was sharing the tunnels with homeless people. Not an issue today. Not sure if it was because of a maintenance vehicle that was driving the tunnels or simply because of the area. There was a lot more user traffic on this stretch of the canal. The “pleasantness” of the trail was a little rough off the I-17, (few trees, commercial businesses) but the further east I went the nicer the areas became. Not a lot. You still had the back side of homes and businesses, but better. Trees became more abundant and there were occasional benches.
