Got a relatively late start at 6:40 am. Met a pair of hikers coming down as I neared the top. One other hiker joined me on the summit, and saw one more coming up as I was on the descent.
The west side shade, and a stiff breeze on the top, and some moderate cloud cover made it bearable.
Afterwards, I went over to hike a portion of the LOST trail up the canyon, but it is closed off from the bottom for the highway expansion project. I drove to top (just beyond the tunnel) and hiked down the old road to the old tunnel. Some bats have taken up residence in the tunnel. Just below the tunnel, an ADOT contractor was coming up the trail to clear it for some planned blasting. I thought about going down the climbing access to explore the bottom of the canyon, but the employee told me the road would be closed soon for the blasting, so I just called it a day so I didn't get stuck on the wrong side of Phoenix. |
