| partners | | Ginny and I have been doing some of the Catalina Mountain front range trails this year (Bear Canyon, Esperero, Sycamore Canyon) so we decided to do Window Rock via the Ventana Trail. This is a tough trail after the first mile or so it is up all the way. The up isn't what makes is hard because Esperero is up, it's the steps, lots of steps and many around 2 feet. Tough for me and I'm not a short person. In spite of my griping it is a beautiful Canyon. The first big climb is to Maiden Pools, seems the crest of the hill gets further away the more you climb. The trail here is good and the steps not too bad. The trail past Maiden Pools gets less use so it's not in as good a shape but still easy to follow. The next 2 miles up Ventana Creek the steps are relentless. Once you leave the creek you start climbing up to the ridge and the trail is steep, the crest seems to get further away the further up you go (that's the problem with seeing your destination as you hike up) Once on the ridge the going is easier until the last .2 miles to the window where it gets steep again. Great scenery the whole hike. Great views of The northwest side of Mount Lemmon, Cathedral Peak and Mount Kimball.
Light flow in Ventana Creek most of the way. Maiden Pools had a light flow and the pools were full though a little algae in some pools. This is a great hike, one you say not again when you are done but you know dang well you'll do it again some day. I have been doing this hike since the early 60's when my father took all of us kids up to the window. Can't believe we were able to do it, of coarse kids have lots of energy and they recover quickly. |
