| partners | | Back in the Gila Mountains near Silver City. We had a couple of hours once we arrived in Silver City and hiked along the Little Cherry Creek Trail. I saw this trail on Google maps and looked up on the internet to see if it actually exists, and found a little info but not a lot. The trail starts out as a two track to private property about 2 miles in. We parked about .25 miles in along this road because the information I got didn't specify how far in along this road I could go. Turns out you can drive in the 2 miles and park at the trail head. Not a lot of parking spots. The road continues on to private property. The Little Cherry Creek Trail continues on for 2.5 miles to the Continental Divide Trail and the junction with the Sawmill Trail from Fort Bayard. Twin Sisters can also be accessed from this trail. Probably an easier way to get there than the Twin Sisters Trail.
The walk along the road which follows Little Cherry Creek was scenic especially the section where the canyon narrows down with rock cliffs on either side. At the trail head the trail starts to climb (about 500 feet) to avoid the private property. We continued on for another 1.5 miles before turning around. Will have to come back to this trail another day to finish it up. Very large and interesting juniper tree where we turned around.
Little Cherry Creek had a light flow. Weather was cold (lower 40's) but not uncomfortable. Breezy in sections especially along the road. Ice still on the ground along sections that didn't get sun, a little snow where we turned around, hardly enough to make a snow ball. Will have to do a guide once I complete the trail. |
