I have done the lower and upper portions of the creek at various other times. We started at the Chiva Falls Trail Head and followed the road sort of to just before Chiva Tank where we cross country'd it to the creek. Went down stream about 1 mile before the canyon narrows a bit and the going gets a little tougher. The creek had a light flow so the going the first mile was fairly easy, no obstructions or major drops in the creek. Some really nice pools (water was too cool for a dip). Nice area to come in the fall after the monsoons. Some really nice mafic rock intrusions in the country rock. These dark rocks polished up nicely in the creek.
There is a 4WD trail called the Redington Loop that encircles this section I call the Central section of the creek. Did this a few years back, hiking not with a vehicle. Interesting hike along the north side of the creek and crossing over at Aliso Canyon and traverses the South side of the creek to Chiva Falls and back on Joaquin Canyon. I might hike that road to where it crosses Aliso Canyon and head up stream from there. Another possibility would be to take the stream that heads down by El Raton Tank down to Tanque Verde Creek.
Not a soul around all day, can't remember ever seeing that before (not counting a few cars on the drive up). The only exception was 2 on horseback at the trail head and a helicopter rounding up cattle. I guess that's the modern round up. Sure beats doing it on horseback in this terrain. |
