| no partners | | This was the typical hike to the rim of Flat Top, on the linked trail, PLUS going to the True Summit. This entails walking due south from where the road hits the rim, across the flat expanse of it. You just walk south, and the plateau gets narrower and narrower, like walking to the bow of a big ship. At the bow of the ship, there is the pile of rocks that is the summit.
My old friend Bob Cardell (famous for finding over 2200 crested saguaros a couple decades ago) had placed a register here around the year 2000 or so. He has since passed away. I had signed it a few times, and so had friends and family. Sadly, I couldn't find it. It was my first trip to the actual summit in a very long time, however.
I was glad to have a friend along on this trip, because a mountain lion has been around town this week, and was seen running up Flat Top. My landlord also saw it in his yard a mile or so to the west of the mountain.
It was a beautiful day. We saw no wildlife. The only birds I saw were ravens. It's so dry that trees are starting to get bark beetle and are succumbing en masse. (Old saying, "It's so dry the trees are whistling for the dogs.")
It's so dry there is a depredation elk hunt going on for the Round Valley area. The elk will congregate in huge herds, and break down barn doors for the hay, and eat all the grass in the fields. It's an archery hunt, cow only. I'm pretty sure you don't need to do the lottery for this one. We have too many elk, they are an introduced species, they don't have enough predators. |
